What is an Au Pair?
An au pair is a young single girl or boy between the ages of 18 and 25 from a different country who takes care of the children and does light household duties, in exchange for board and lodging and a monthly allowance. The maximum stay of an au pair in Belgium is 12 months.

The au pair programme is a cultural exchange. What a great opportunity it would be for you to visit another country and to learn a foreign language. As an Au Pair you will have a wonderful time living and travelling in Europe / USA.

Duties and Responsibilities

It will be your responsibility to care for your family's children and to help with light housework. Each host family is different, so your duties will vary depending on the age of your host family's children and your host family’s job.

  • Providing the children's breakfast and lunch
  • Bathing and dressing the children
  • Supervising and playing with your family's children
  • Tidying up the children's rooms and doing the children's laundry
  • Taking the children to school, appointments and lessons
  • Helping the children with homework
  • Light housework: ironing, vacuuming, cleaning up the house, fetching groceries, cooking light meals,...

Belgium

Au Pair Gets

  • A room of her or his own
  • Attendance to a language course in a recognized institution
  • A minimum monthly allowance of € 450
  • 1 day off per week, 1 weekend off per month and 1 week of leave for every 6 months in Belgium

Selection Criteria / Requirements

  • Has to be between 18 - 25 years old
  • Has completed her or his secondary education (or followed classes until the age of 18)
  • Has sound knowledge of English, French, Dutch or German
  • Is interested in learning a new language
  • Has experience in childcare (babysitting or professional)
  • Must like and have experience with light housework
  • Has a sense of responsibility, has a warm and positive attitude, is independent,  mature, reliable, hardworking and flexible
  • The au pair is in good health
  • Has a certificate of good conduct (a clean police record)

Netherlands

Au Pair Gets

  • Pocket money €300-€400 per month
  • €270 yearly for study costs
  • €10 telephone allowance monthly
  • Insurance paid by host family
  • Visa costs paid by the family
  • Travel expenses paid by the family if the Au-Pair stays one year

Selection Criteria / Requirements

  • Have to love children
  • Age between 18-26 years old
  • Knowledge of English, German, French or Dutch Language
  • Pedagogical background, First Aid Course and having a Driver's License are all a plus
  • Must know how to cycle and swim
  • Light household work is part of task
  • Maximum of 30 hours of work
  • Preferrably 1 year assignment
  • Summer Au-Pair is a possibility

USA

Au Pair Gets

  • Earning money (Weekly stipend of US$ 195)
  • Educational allowance of up to US$500
  • Can stay for up to 2 years (they can extend their stay after the 12 months for either 6, 9 or 12 months)
  • Time for travel at the end of the stay (“13th month” – extra month to travel)
  • Free basic health insurance
  • Free room and board in New York for 4days orientation
  • 2 weeks paid vacation 

Selection Criteria / Requirements

  • 18-26 years old
  • Suitable personality
  • Not been an au pair legally in the USA before
  • Not a US citizen
  • Healthy
  • High School graduate
  • Can swim
  • Unmarried and no children
  • Valid Driver's License
  • English Level above 4 (=proficient)
  • Clean Criminal Record
  • At least 200 hours childcare experience (babysitting, tutoring)
